ASIA/ISRAEL - New emergency service in six towns in the Gaza Strip

Saturday, 17 March 2007

Gaza (Agenzia Fides) - “First Aid Centres in Gaza Strip” is the name of a new project launched by Caritas Jerusalem to give emergency aid in places where healthcare is precarious or non existent.
The project in collaboration with CAFOD (Catholic Aid and Overseas Development) aims to meet the needs caused by continual violence in Gaza last year.
In many places ambulances cannot reach the wounded and many affected villages are far from the nearest hospital .
The project consists in collaboration between the local medical organisation and a local municipality, or some other organisation which provides emergency health care and aid. These new medical centres will be open on day a week to intervene with aid in the reported areas where local volunteer doctors care for patients.
The six communities in need of first aid services identified by the Palestinian Health Ministry and Caritas Jerusalem are the following: Al-Bureij Camp, Maghazi Camp, Al-Mosaddar Area and Mughraqa (central Gaza), Beit Lahia (north) Al-Emoor (south).
Moreover Caritas and the ministry with the identified local communities organised meetings to identify individual emergencies. The municipalities involved, the youth centres and volunteer doctors signed an agreement with Caritas Jerusalem promising continuity at the centres.
