EUROPE/ITALY - MEETING “THE DESIRE FOR THE TRUTH” : CARDINAL RUINI WARNS “THEOLOGY MUST NEVER BE SEPARATED FROM PHILOSOPHY”

Thursday, 9 October 2003

Rome (Fides Service) – “Faith and reason can never contradict one another if they both tend towards the truth, the authentic condition for the freedom of the human person” said Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the Pope’s Vicar for Rome Diocese, at the meeting opened today “Desire to know the truth. Theology and philosophy Fides et Ratio five years on ” at the Pontifical Lateran University as part of celebrations to mark 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul’s election to the Papacy.
Stressing the unchanging validity of Pope John Paul II’s encyclical (1998), the Cardinal underlined the necessity of re-uniting theology and philosophy whose separation has caused “impoverishment in both fields and fragmentation which today reveals all its precariousness”. The Holy Father’s confidence in human reasoning is palpable on every page of the encyclical and it reveals the confidence of a man willing and ready for the encounter with God in the figure of Jesus Christ” the Cardinal concluded.
