Wednesday, 8 October 2003

New York (Fides Service) – Anguish grows in the Ituri region of Democratic Congo. According to Fred Eckart, United Nation Organisation spokesman, early on Monday 6th October in Katchele village in Ituri, at least 67 civilians were killed, forty of them small children, all belonging to the Hema ethnic group. The massacre was perpetrated by Lendu warriors who are against the Hema. Since 1999 the region of Ituri has been bloodied by clashes and violence between Hema and Lendu. At the beginning of September 2003 the United Nations sent a peacekeeping mission MONUC, which has so far failed to stop the violence. SL (Fides Service 8/10/2003 EM lines 7 Words: 102)
