ASIA/INDIA - The Pope appoints new Bishop of Bhagalpur

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 11 January 2007 appointed as Bishop of Bhagalpur (India) Rev. Kurian Valiakandathil, a member of the clergy of Bhagalpur, until now parish priest at Leela.
Rev. Kurian (Ciriaco) Valiakandathil was born on 18 November 1952 at Elanjy, in the Eparchy of Palai, Kerala. After attending minor seminary in Bhagalpur, he entered St. Albert's College in Ranchi to study philosophy while studying theology at the Papal Seminary in Pune. He was ordained a priest on 28 October 1977 for the diocese of Bhagalpur. Since then he has ministered as follows: 1977-1979: assistant priest at Belantar, Seminary spiritual director and teacher; 1979-1983: director of Vianney Hostel for tribal boys in Bhagalpur; 1983-1986: parish priest at Leela; parish priest of the Catholic Ashram, Giridih; director of St. John's Britto High School, Maheshmunda; since 1997: parish priest at Leela.
