EUROPE/FRANCE - Epiphany of solidarity with African Churches

Thursday, 4 January 2007

Paris (Fides Service) - The poor of Africa will benefit from special collections in churches all over France on the Feast of the Epiphany (Sunday 7 January in France).
“We have asked Catholics to make a gesture of solidarity to support evangelisation in Africa. Collections on Sunday will be sent to needy dioceses in Africa to support the life of the local Churches” National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies Fr Jean-Marie Aubert, in charge of the Pontifical Epiphany Collection for Africa, told Fides. “African dioceses still rely on European Catholics to help support local Church life and pastoral projects. The Catechists for example need to be properly formed in the faith. Catechists work closely with Christian village communities and theirs is truly a mission. Youth movements need educators and leaders. Villages distant from the parish centres want to celebrate in worthy places, hence the need to build small village chapels”.
“Let us give to the men and women who work to make Christ manifest to all men and women that they may be saved, the means to continue their evangelising mission on the continent of Africa. With a gesture of sharing everyone can share in the Church’s missionary activity” Fr. Aubert concludes. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 4/1/2007 righe 20 parole 232)
