Rome (Agenzia Fides) - The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that unless more donations arrive before the end of the month it will have to suspend food aid for at least 700,000 Angolans many of them children and repatriated refugees,.
At least 12.6 million dollars are needed to purchase 7,700 tons of food. The situation is so critical that unless more funds arrive food aid will be suspended and in September all WFP operations in Angola will be stop.
The Organisation said that at the end of last year in rural areas of southern and eastern Angola at least 900,000 people did not have enough food to eat. Of these 45% were children under five suffering from chronic malnutrition.
Many areas of the country medical and school services are non existent and millions of anti-personnel mines still lie hidden under Angolan soil.
The programme to feed the 700,000 Angolans now in danger of losing all international assistance started in April and aims to help the most vulnerable sectors, children pregnant mothers, infants and people with AIDS or TB . (AP) (24/7/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:23; Parole:237)
