Valencia (Agenzia Fides) - "We have one priest for every 25,000 people and we are looking for priests willing to come to the Amazon region of Peru to help with Christian formation". This call was launched by Bishop Juan Luis Martín Buisson, vicar apostolic of Pucallpa in Peru, while he was in Valencia, Spain for the recent World Meeting of Families. At a meeting with Archbishop Agustín García Gascón of Valencia, the Peruvian Bishop said the priests should be willing to stay for at least three years for the mission to be fruitful. "We have no priests from Spain and it would be wonderful to have a group of 4 or 5. We have other groups of priests, 7 Canadians, and a group of priests from Mexico but we would like more to be able to meet the many needs".
Bishop Juan Luis Martin Buisson described the Vicariate briefly: there are many indigenous communities and they are spiritually and materially poor; sects from north America are a serious threat; priests are very scarce and this means the local Church has to neglect much of the work is used to undertake and concentrate mainly on preaching and administering the Sacraments. "We would like to focus on education to the faith- the Bishop said - there are plenty of opportunities for education to the faith, social pastoral to defend human rights, promotion of women and children who suffer greatly, in prisons there are many young detainees". The Vicariate used to run several schools but because of the scarcity of clergy this field of pastoral was shelved to give priority to the proclamation of the Word of God. “In the past we undertook various initiatives to help farmer obtain a better price for their products - the Bishop said -, today we focus on animation and formation, preaching the Gospel and its connection with involvement in society”. "Priests willing to come to Peru for an experience of evangelisation should contact the Archbishop of Valencia, and we will be very happy to have them” the Vicar Apostolic of Pucallpa concluded.
