Hanoi (Agenzia Fides) - Human trafficking is increasing complexly and unpredictably in Vietnam and all over the world, in which social networks are a "fertile ground" for criminals to exploit to lure and defraud victims.
The situation of forcing Vietnamese people to go to neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and China for online fraud is also becoming a hot social issue in Vietnam, causing serious consequences.
Sr. Teresa Pham Ninh Khanh Hau of Caritas Hung Hoa Diocese had a talk with more than 100 teenagers to share essential knowledges aimed at helping them raise awareness and vigilance against human trafficking.
Children in Tien Non Parish, a poor countryside of rice farming, still lack information about safe migration and human trafficking when they are at the threshold of making important choices for their future. And certainly the knowledge provided by the Safe Migration and Human Trafficking Prevention Committee of Caritas Hue has helped them to be more cautious and confident in making the right decisions, especially when faced with a variety of information between “right” and “wrong” on social networks and in life.
According to the Ministry of Police, the government of Vietnam has recently discovered and investigated hundreds of cases in which rescued many victims, and dismantled the criminal inter-provincial and inter-national groups of human trafficking.
And particularly in the year 2024 the country investigated and handled 163 cases of human trafficking and only in the first 6 months of 2025, 120 cases were investigated and prosecuted.
With more than 72 million users of social networks, accounting for about 73% of the population, Vietnam stands one of the leading countries in the world using the internet and social network. Of these, 7% are between the ages of 13 and 17 and nearly 10% are between the ages of 18 and 24. According to statistics, Vietnam currently has about 24.7 million children (accounting for nearly 25% of the population), of which nearly 97% of children are using the internet for about 5-7 hours a day.
