ASIA/SINGAPORE - Cardinal Martino Papal Envoy to celebrations for 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations with Holy See

Singapore (Agenzia Fides) - First papal representative to the Republic of Singapore in 1981, Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, today President of the Pontifical Councils for Peace and Justice and for the Pastoral care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples, has been sent by Pope Benedict XVI as his Special Envoy to solemn celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Holy See. The mission which will accompany the Special Envoy comprises Mgr. Eugene Vaz, Vicar General of the archdiocese of Singapore; Rev Patrick Goh, chancellor of Singapore archdiocese; Mgr. Brian Udaigwe, counsellor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Singapore; Mgr. John John Kallarackal, secretary Apostolic Nunciature in Singapore.
Today 20 June the Cardinal will give a talk to lay Catholics on the commitment for human promotion in the light of Catholic Social Doctrine. On 21 June he will meet the local priests and religious in the morning and in the early evening preside a Mass of Thanksgiving in Singapore’s Catholic Cathedral dedicated to the Good Shepherd, focussing in his homily on “Charity as the path par excellence for evangelisation” . The Cardinal will also read a special Message from the Pope. On Thursday 22 June after a meeting with Singapore’s foreign minister, Gorge Yeo, he will give a public conference on the role of religions to promote solidarity and denounce terrorism.
