La Paz (Agenzia Fides) - The Bible and the Social Doctrine of the Church as resources in the struggle to eliminate poverty in Bolivia. The Catholic Bishops of Bolivia have taken an unprecedented initiative deciding to send copies of the Bible and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church to every member of the National Assembly which will resume its activity in the month of August. With this gesture the Bishops’ Conference according to its President Cardinal Julio Terrazas intends to “reawaken the consciences of the nation’s representatives”. “The necessity is extreme, the people have no work” says Card. Terrazas, adding that “the Church defends justice and peace and life”. The books will be purchased and delivered to each MP with the help of Catholic charity organisation Aid to the Church in Need. Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in South America with a monthly average income per head of less than 60 Euro and in rural areas only one third of the people has access to clean water.
