ASIA/INDIA - Election of Bishop of Allahabad

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On June 17, the Holy Father appointed the Reverend Louis Mascarenhas, of the clergy of Allahabad, India, until now diocesan administrator, as bishop of the same diocese.
Msgr. Louis Mascarenhas was born on 29 September 1959 in Kelmbet, Karnataka, in the old diocese of Mangalore, now Udupi. After attending Saint Joseph’s Regional Seminary in Allahabad, he was awarded a bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in English literature and a post-graduate diploma in rural development.
He was ordained a priest on 4 April 1989 for the diocese of Allahabad.
He has held the following offices: deputy parish priest of Chakeri, Kanpur (1989-1992); deputy parish priest of Akbarpur and chargé of the mission of Jaffarnagar (1992-1995); parish priest of Saint Joseph, Jaffarnagar (1995-1997); official of the episcopal Curia (1997-2000); director of the Diocesan Development and Welfare Society and the Social Centre (1997-2005); member of the Financial Board (2003-2021); rector of Saint Joseph’s College, Allahabad (2005-2014); parish priest of Saint Peter and head of Saint Peter’s School, Allahabad (2014-2020); member of the diocesan committee for construction (2014-2021); vicar general (2014-2021); since 2020, director of Nazareth Hospital, Allahabad, and since 2021, diocesan administrator of Allahabad.
