Thursday, 23 February 2023

Uturoa (Agenzia Fides) - The mission of the laity baptized in the Church was the focus of the three-day meeting that has just ended in Uturoa on the island of Raiatea in the Raromatai archipelago, the Leeward Islands. The meeting, which brought together the Catholics of the archipelago, took place from Sunday evening 19 to 22 February.
"Every 6 months we create a meeting, which we call PUTUPUTURA'A here, during which the 4 islands share 3 days, presided over by the Archbishop of Papeete, Jean Pierre Cottanceau, SS.CC", wrote Father Sandro Lafranconi to Fides, a priest of the Society of African Missions (SMA) missionary in the Archipelago.
"On this occasion, we paused to reflect on the Synod - explained Fr. Lafranconi who has been in charge of the pastoral care of the Raromatai since August 2022. In particular, Archbishop Cottanceau deepened the paragraphs of Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution of the Second Vatican Council, dedicated to the laity in the mission of the Church. It is a significant event - the missionary underlined - also considering "the traditionally Protestant fabric of the population". (SL/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 23/2/2023)
