Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - Today, July 26, the International Seminar "Comprehensive Disarmament in Latin America and the Caribbean" is being held at the Santo Tomás University of Bogota, whose objective is to inform about disarmament and promote non-violence throughout the continent. As the note sent to Fides informs, the Seminar's point of reference is the position of Pope Francis and the various signs of hope that from faith support non-violence. In this sense, some theological reflections are planned to promote the work for disarmament, the global mobilization against war, as well as the action of the Churches and confessional organizations of Latin America and the Caribbean in favor of disarmament. Listening to local experiences of disarmament, expressions of non-violent resistance, and community denunciations of trends such as militarism will offer different perspectives for the discussion. This will focus on the accompaniment that, according to faith, seeks to support the work of organizations, churches and communities that seek to build democracy despite threats from armed actors. The Seminar aims to promote a Latin American and Caribbean context committed to the construction of peace and justice, reflecting on some situations in the region such as militarism, corruption, human rights violations and the fragility of the systems administration of justice and that promote phenomena such as mercenarism and paramilitarism. The Seminar, which is broadcast live on the Internet for those registered, is organized by CELAM (Latin American Episcopal Council) and a group of religious organizations and realities that work for peace in different parts of the world, and will focus on the importance to promote true disarmament in the region. The president of the Latin American Episcopal Council, Monsignor Miguel Cabrejos, Archbishop of Trujillo, will deliver the opening speech. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 26/7/2022)
