Light of Mercy Catholic Centre at Phnom Penh cares for 19 disabled children aged between 8 and 18.
The Centre was opened in 1997 by the Sisters of Providence of Portieux. Today it is run by Jesuit Service Cambodia which promotes education for children with disabilities. Some of the children have impaired hearing, others suffer from cerebral palsy or polio, others are maimed having lost limbs in anti-personnel mine explosions
After primary school pupils unable to pass on to secondary school are taught activities according to their talents such as dress making, massaging, or car mechanics.
The Centre also supports 20 blind children boarding at Krousar Thmey School and provides money for food and school materials for many children in villages around Phnom Penh. (AP) (26/4/2006 Agenzia Fides; Righe:20; Parole:180)
