Abuja (Agenzia Fides) - "Our hearts and prayers are with the bereaved families and we pray that God will give them comfort. And for those who have suffered injuries we pray for a speedy recovery", said the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the State of Kaduna, Father John Joseph Hayab, who spoke on behalf of all Christian denominations to the victims of the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train that occurred on the evening of March 28 (see Fides, 30/3/2022), expressed his condolences and solidarity. The CAN President, to which the Nigerian Bishops' Conference also belongs, called on Christians and all people of good will to "continue to pray and to do what is necessary so that there may be peace". Last March 28, a train carrying about 400 passengers was ambushed by a terrorist commando, who blew up the tracks and forced the train bound for Kaduna to stop on the Rijana-Katari section. The terrorists boarded the train and opened fire indiscriminately. According to reports from travelers, the first class compartments remain the main objective of the raid. The attack killed at least eight people, wounded around 30 and abducted an unknown number of travelers, including the director of the Bank of Agriculture. According to the local press, the kidnappers have meanwhile contacted the families of the kidnappers and demanded a ransom for their release. As Pastor Hayab suspects, there is "apparently an extensive network to gather information and carefully plan their actions". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 31/3/2022)
