Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Presidency of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM) presented Pope Francis with a summary report of the first Ecclesial Assembly of Latin America and the Caribbean, held between 21 and 28 November 2021 (see Fides, 29/11/2021). The 20-page document includes a series of graphic information with the participants, the reference texts, the pastoral challenges, the media and the evaluation of the meeting.
As the note from CELAM informs, the priority pastoral processes and the pastoral itinerary planned for this 2022, inspired by the process of renewal and restructuring, by the Ecclesial Assembly and the Synod on Synodality, were also presented to the Holy Father, which "connect all of them ", as they told the Pope. The CELAM Presidency reaffirmed the commitment to "animate hope, in view of the Guadeloupe Jubilee in 2031 and the Redemption Jubilee in 2033". "This process, in which we are learning to 'walk together', connects us to the itinerary proposed for the XVI General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops", said the Bishops, then noting the contribution of the Ecclesial Assembly: "the pastoral methodology, the contents addressed, the moments of spirituality and liturgical celebration, and the spaces for listening, dialogue and community discernment, stimulate us to continue to bet on a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission".
The 41 pastoral challenges that emerged from the Assembly were divided into seven thematic groups: Jesus Christ, Word, Church; young people, women, laity; families and frailty; cry of the poor; cry of the Earth; indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, interculturality, diversity; violence, democracy, corruption and impunity.
The pastoral itinerary of 2022 foresees an extended Seminar on the horizons and the mission of CELAM, as well as various meetings by region with the Bishops of the 22 Episcopal Conferences. A meeting is also planned with the Secretaries of the Episcopal Conferences and, for the month of July, the Extraordinary Assembly of CELAM, in which the inauguration of the new headquarters in Bogota will also take place.
