Como (Agenzia Fides) - Ridha Mahmoudi, a 56-year-old Tunisian, who attacked and stabbed Fr. Roberto Malgesini on September 15, 2020, was sentenced to life imprisonment. The judges rejected the defense's request to declare Mahmoudi incapable of understanding or granting a psychiatric report. The prosecutor had argued that the murderer was aware of what he was doing at the time of the crime and that it had been premeditated.
Fr. Roberto Malgesini, 51, originally from Valtellina (Italy), was assassinated in Como, in the center of the city, not far from the parish of which he was a collaborator, shortly after 7 in the morning. While he was loading his car with food and drink that he was going to distribute, as he did every day, to the people who lived on the street, they stabbed him in the back with a knife. Fr. Roberto was known for his special dedication to helping the homeless, migrants and the marginalized (see Fides, 15/9/2020). "He was a holy priest, we are all called to collect his legacy. The entire Christian community must continue with his commitment towards the last", said the Bishop of the Diocese of Como, Monsignor Oscar Cantoni, at the funeral of Fr. Roberto celebrated in his hometown. "He chose, in communion with the Bishop, to take care of the last, to accept their fragility… he had a delicate attention of love for everyone and everyone was attracted by his ability to welcome them, gratuitously and without judgment".
