Bogota (Agenzia Fides) – Human trafficking and sexual exploitation are two closely related phenomena and occur in many parts of the world, they affect people of all ages, but especially minors who, in situations of vulnerability, extreme poverty or exclusion, are forced by necessity to resort to different sources of income. This scourge that affects humanity has been growing in recent times, Monsignor Héctor Fabio Henao Gaviria, Director of the National Secretariat of Social Pastoral Care (SNPS) of Colombia reminds us, in a video message sent to Fides, for the International Day against sexual exploitation and trafficking in women and children, which is celebrated today, September 23. "These vulnerable people are easily captured by people who, with obscure intentions, induce them along this path and traffick them as if they were objects for exchange, business and commerce", said the Prelate. The Episcopal Conference of Colombia (CEC) has raised its voice several times to draw attention to this illegal activity, "which is a true crime that affects humanity and destroys social life, the life project of young children and also of adults, who are victims of these chains that generate so much destruction in the world", the Bishop reiterated.
Through Red Clamor, which includes CEC, religious congregations, lay movements and various ecclesial organizations, attention is focused on the work of accompanying the victims and on the search for solutions that help fight this scourge, recalled Monsignor Henao Gaviria, inviting awareness and prevention of this crime through the greater dissemination of information, at all levels, only in this way "can we contribute to creating safe environments, so that people are not victims of this criminal activity that today does so much harm to the world and to our young people".
