Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The current context of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting humanity has caused an increase in the number of migrant population, which adds to the difficult economic, social and political realities that characterize the dynamics of all countries. To reflect on these aspects, various governmental, civil and ecclesial organizations will participate in the Regional Meeting of Migrants of Latin America, scheduled for July 26, from 9 to 1.30 pm, Colombian time, promoted by Red Clamor, an ecclesial Latin American network, that deals with migrants, displaced persons, refugees and human trafficking.
The UN estimates for the year 2019 speak of 272 million migrants in the world, who move from their countries of origin in search of a more dignified life. To these must be added 1 billion internal migrants, who move within their country. According to the note sent to Agenzia Fides, various organizations, civil and ecclesial bodies are currently working in search of answers to this humanitarian problem that the migrant population suffers, "but unfortunately hands and hearts do not reach the growing dimension of the pressing reality described that moreover, is incorporating many other populations into a situation of increasing vulnerability".
It is therefore a question of offering a virtual space with the following objectives: to make visible and raise awareness on the problem of migrants; look for ways to help strengthen access to the rights of migrant populations; identify the opportunities for inclusion of these populations, as well as their resources in terms of resilience and transform the conditions of violence in the region; establish concrete collective actions aimed at effectively modifying the living conditions of the migrant population; work on the creation of a regional network for the joint treatment of the collective rights of migrants.
The guidelines for this ecclesial event will be the four fundamental attitudes proposed by Pope Francis to guarantee respect for the human rights of migrants: Reception, Protection, Promotion and Integration. There will be three panels that will respond to topics such as: the situation of migrants in the region, the cultural and economic contribution of migratory and migrant movements, access to rights and violations.
Likewise, 8 simultaneous workshops will be offered, designed to encourage the active virtual participation of each participant. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 23/7/2021)
