Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - "In recent days my prayer has often been aimed at Haiti, following the assassination of its President and the wounding of his wife. I join in the heartfelt appeal of the country’s Bishops to "lay down weapons, choose life, choose to live together fraternally in the interest of all and in the interest of Haiti". I am close to the beloved Haitian people; I hope that the spiral of violence will cease and the nation can resume the journey toward a future of peace and harmony": these are the words of the Holy Father Francis at yesterday's Angelus, Sunday, July 11, recited from the Gemelli Polyclinic where he is hospitalized. After the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse (see Fides, 8/7/2021), the Conference of Religious of Haiti (CHR) asked to clarify what happened: "religious life in Haiti requires an investigation to be conducted to clarify this heinous crime, so that all the guilty can be brought to justice", reads the note sent to Fides. This occasion serves to "demand justice for all other victims of violence across the country", it reads. The CHR in the statement "condemns violence with all its force, wherever it comes from, and in all its forms, and renews its hope and sincere commitment in the struggle for the re-establishment of a more human and fraternal society, built on the rights, dignity and reconciliation among all the daughters and sons of the nation". It does so based on the "values of the Gospel" and in its capacity as "privileged witness of the legitimate aspirations of the Haitian people". In Haiti the situation is very tense and difficult even at the political level. After the assassination of the Head of State, the Senate and the opposition tried to fill the empty seat in the office of president. On Friday, July 9, the Senate adopted a resolution (8 votes in favor, 2 abstentions) appointing the President of the Upper House, Senator Joseph Lambert, provisional President of Haiti until the new Parliament takes office on the second Monday of January 2022, and the appointment of a new President, who will be elected on February 7, 2022.
