AMERICA/PERU - “Day for the Unborn Child”, Bishops’ message: “Defend life always, everywhere and against all injustice because it is a gift of God”

Wednesday, 22 March 2006

Lima (Fides Service) - “We celebrate the Day of the Unborn Child on the same day as the Mystery of the Incarnation is announced by God who does not leave us at the mercy of evil but protects all men and women, especially the weakest and most helpless” the Bishops of Peru said in a message for the Day of the Unborn Child issued by the Family and Life Commission of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference and the Committee for Bio-ethics and Pro-life.
“This celebration - the message reads - is not enough to protect innocent life but it can be a valuable opportunity to increase awareness in Peru about the dignity and sacredness of the life from the moment of conception”. At the same time it will serve to denounce movements to promote the legalisation of abortion. The Commission laments that the media often opt for moral relativism or hide the abortion risks involved in oral emergency contraceptives. Hence the “Church’s pastoral responsibility on this subject”.
The Bishops recall that Pope Benedict XVI has spoken on the subject frequently. Therefore, the message continues, , “faithful to the teaching of the Church and the Holy Father’s special concern with regard to human life, on this 25 March let us proclaim with words and deeds the Gospel of Life”. The message ends with an urgent appeal: “The hour demands an integral message: Defend life always, everywhere and against all injustice because it is a gift of God”.
