AFRICA/MOZAMBIQUE - Humanitarian crisis in Nampula worsens

Maputo (Agenzia Fides) - Covid-19, cholera and lack of food are the plagues that afflict the Mozambican province of Nampula, where on March 6 during his pastoral visit, His Exc. Mgr. Inacio Saure, Archbishop of Nampula, supervised the delivery of emergency foodstuffs in the reeption camp of Corrane. Mgr. Saure expressed his concern following the difficult situation of the children welcomed in the structure. It currently has 1,700 school-age children without any possibility of education in the camp.
On 25 February 2021, the provincial health Department of Nampula reported 361 new cases of cholera, in the districts of Meconta and at the administrative Headquarters of Namialo and Corrane, where the reception center for internally displaced persons from the province of Cabo Delgado is located, whose population is forced to flee by violence perpetrated by armed groups.
The province of Nampula also lives in a state of high food insecurity due to low rainfall.
Local sources report the deaths of 35 people, 25 of whom belong to the same family, in the district of Muecate, perhaps for having eaten a meal of ground wild grass, which was poisonous.
With regard to Covid-19, Mozambique has recorded 62,882 cases and 700 deaths. The province of Nampula, although not among the first in terms of contamination recorded at the national level, has 2,235 cases and 19 deaths. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 11/3/2021)
