Port au Prince (Agenzia Fides) - "As men and women religious trying to provide assistance in all areas of the life of the Haitian people and in the most remote and difficult places in the country ... we witness the misery of our people. Unfortunately, it appears that the State is ignoring this misery Strengthened by our experiences and our prophetic mission, on the 38th anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II, we want to remember the famous words addressed to the Church in Haiti in his homily for the occasion: 'Something has to change here! The poor need to regain hope!', said the Conference of Haitian Religious (CHR) in a letter to the President of Haiti, Jovenel Moïse, on the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the visit of Pope John Paul II to the island (March 9, 1983).
"Thirty-eight long years after this Pope's visit - continues the letter - the seed of death now seems to have prevailed over the seed of life. The country is dying, insecurity is widespread, the poorest can no longer endure this, the population is on the verge of desperation, the country is without a government. We are all witnesses and victims of too many crimes, too many injustices and too many inequalities".
The religious recalled the denunciation of the Bishops last February: "The country is on the brink of the abyss! The daily life of the Haitian people is reduced to death, murder, impunity and insecurity. Dissatisfaction reigns everywhere!" (see Fides, 3/2/2021). They also recall food insecurity (see Fides, 27/2/2021), as a fundamental right of a people.
Then they continue: "One wonders: What is the point of holding on to power when more than half the population lives in conditions of chronic food insecurity? Why want at all costs to extend or revoke a semblance of a mandate without being able to guarantee the safety of life and property, the free movement of people? What good is a president or a government that is unable to stop the funeral procession that causes daily pain among the population?", said the Haitian religious.
The letter ends with a direct message to the President: "In view of these facts, in the face of the ongoing process of dehumanizing an entire people, you cannot remain a spectator ... You have a duty to respond quickly and specifically to the requests of the people, the first of which is respect for the laws of this beautiful country". (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 10/3/2021)
