AFRICA/BENIN - Presidential elections, polling stations close, second round forecasted

Monday, 6 March 2006

Cotonou (Fides Service) - A few hours ago polling stations in the first round of presidential elections in Benin closed after being open yesterday 5 March and some hours this Monday morning because of logistic difficulties.
The local press forecasts a second round between Yayi Boni and Adrien Houngbédji. Outsider Boni is presenting himself in politics for the first time having been chairman of the West Africa Development Bank. Whereas Adrien Houngbédji former speaker of the House is considered an expert in politics.
The national independent electoral commission said it will be many days before the results are known. According to Benin law if none of the candidates obtains 50 per cent plus one of the votes the two with the most votes stand for a second round of elections.
Despite tensions on the eve of the vote due to claims of possible fraud, the elections were peaceful, no incidents were reported.
Four million eligible voters were called to elect a new president to succeed President Mathieu Kerekou. In power since 1972, with only four years interval, Kerekou was prevented from standing for presidency again by the constitution of this small country wedged between Togo and Nigeria. After imposing a military dictatorship he started a slow process of democratisation and resigned when defeated in the first elections. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 6/3/2006 righe 23 parole 279)
