Thursday, 2 March 2006

Hamburg (Fides Service) - The archdiocese of Hamburg representing all the Catholic dioceses of Germany, will officially open the Lenten fundraising Campaign 2006 promoted by Misereor the aid agency of the German Bishops’ Conference with various initiatives starting from the first Sunday in Lent, 5 March. The campaign launching programme includes a solidarity march for school children organised by various Catholic schools in Hamburg, an Exhibition at Hamburg municipal centre, a charity concert and a“Hamburg Archdiocese Women’s Day”.
The Campaign will be opened on Sunday 5 March with a special Mass at 10am in Hamburg’s Catholic Cathedral presided by the Archbishop Werner Thissen, in the presence of representatives of different continents including Cardinal Julio Terrazas Archbishop of Santa Cruz della Sierra archdiocese in Bolivia for America; Bishop Robert Mihiirwa of Fort Portal diocese in Uganda for Africa; Fr. Anthony Sharma, SJ, apostolic prefect of Nepal for Asia. During Lent these and other guests will tour German dioceses to speak about the Church’s involvement in promoting development in their respective countries.
“Sharing the Fullness of Life” is the motto of the Lenten Campaign 2006 which focuses in particular on promoting equal rights for women in developing countries. The German bishops denounce a world situation in which 70% of the people living in extreme poverty are women and that women often suffer discrimination with regard to opportunities for work and development. The say that women, 50% of the world’s population and 60% of the world’s labour force, earn only 10% of salaries paid in the whole world and are only 1% of the world’s property owners. The aim of the Bishops’ Lenten Solidarity Campaign which will culminate with a collection in churches all over Germany on April 2 the fifth Sunday of Lent, is to raise awareness and response to meet this problem which is one of the Millennial Goals identified by the United Nations.
