Bogota (Agenzia Fides) - The President of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM), Archbishop Héctor Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, urged the Bishops of the continent to accept Pope Francis’ call to join the "Day of prayer, fasting and works of charity", announced by the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity on May 14, to implore the Father and Lord of life to help humanity overcome the coronavirus pandemic.
CELAM’s note sent to Fides reports that the Bishops of the continent will invoke God so that "a cure for Covid 19 is soon found, and thus health and development are restored, so that together we build a more human and fraternal civilization". It is also an opportunity to express closeness and prayer in a particular way to those who suffer due to Covid-19, entrusting them to the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, as mother and empress of America.
The Archbishop of Maracaibo and President of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, Mgr. José Luis Azuaje, through a message invites "all Christians of our nation" to join the World Day of Prayer, Fasting and Charity, proposed by the Higher Committee for Human Fraternity and welcomed by Pope Francis.
In his message the Archbishop writes: "We want to invite all Christians to join together on Thursday 14 May 2020 in prayer, so that the Lord may give wisdom to scientists and find the vaccine against this disease. At the same time to pray for the sick; to fast so a sto experience the hunger that millions of families in Venezuela go through; but it is not only a fast from bread, but to abandon pessimistic attitudes and hopeless afflictions. Also to remember the need to be in solidarity with the most vulnerable in our communities".
"As Venezuelans - he concludes - we all need each other, but we also need the spiritual strength that comes from God to remain firm and engage in the necessary changes in our homeland that promote human dignity and the common good". (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 14/5/2020)
