New Delhi (Fides Service) - Church activity to promote education and care for marginalised people will be the main topics for discussion at the next general assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India CBCI to be held in Bangalore, capital of Karnataka state from 8 to 15 February. The Bishops of three different rites, Latin, Syro-Malabar and Syro-Malankara meet twice a year for a general assembly.
The focus for 2006 will be Catholic commitment in society and the country as a whole: Catholic schools of all grades offering highly appreciated and sought after quality education for Catholic and many non Catholic children and students; Catholic care for the poor, the marginalised the sick and the dying following the shining example of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. Many other individuals and groups follow in her footsteps working all over India in the same spirit.
Presenting the work of the assembly Card. Telesphore Toppo, president of the CBCI said the bishops would also be reading and reflecting on the first Encyclical written by Pope Benedict XVI to be released 25 January which has the title God is Love.
The CBCI has 205 Bishop members of the three Catholic Rites in India: 3 cardinals, 29 archbishops, 137 active bishops, 36 retired bishops. (Agenzia Fides 24/01/2006 Righe: 25 Parole: 276
