OCEANIA/ SOLOMON ISLANDS - Experience of Missionary Sisters of the Assumption evangelisers in the Pacific

Monday, 23 January 2006

Honiara (Fides Service) - It was founded only 6 years ago but the religious congregation of the Sisters Missionaries of the Assumption is already fully involved in evangelisation in Solomon Islands.” The Society of Apostolic Life was founded in 1989 in Davao, in the Philippines to care for the poor and spread the Gospel.
Today these sisters who left their own country to come here are a point of reference for the Catholic community in Solomons and other areas of the Pacific for their dynamism and vitality in pastoral activity. “Our charisma - says Sr. Julia Abarquez - calls us to mission, a service marked by hope and joy inspired by the knowledge of the Assumption into Heaven of our sister and mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary”.
The first Missionaries of the Assumption came to Solomons in 1994. They are involved in pastoral care for the indigenous peoples, assistance to women and children in difficulty, helping with parish work, youth pastoral and teaching in schools. In the archdiocese of Honiara the supervise Sunday Catechism classes and in Tenaru they have a Centre for Family Apostolate. (Agenzia Fides 23/1/2006 righe 22 parole 236)
