Campaign for World Mission Sunday: This year's example country is Ethiopia

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) - "The spirit of Caritas is to help marginalized communities and accompany them to become architects of their future. Our 'Project Compassion' has allowed us to achieve important changes over these 54 years". This is what is stated in a note sent to Agenzia Fides by the national manager of Caritas Australia, Paul O'Callaghan, on the occasion of the launch of "Project Compassion", an annual campaign for Lenten fundraising organized by the pastoral body of the Episcopal Conference Australia for the promotion of charity, and started as usual, on Ash Wednesday.
The campaign this year focuses in particular on the global water crisis: "According to the United Nations, more and more people die every year, the majority under the age of five, due to the diseases caused by dirty water. The lack of clean water resources means a disruption in girls' education and deprives communities of resources and food", explained O'Callaghan.
The theme of hope will guide this initiative, analyzed through six stories that describe the development works carried out by Caritas in communities around the world: in particular, the six stories come from Zimbabwe, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Bangladesh, Vietnam and from Australia.
Like every year, the initiative involves parishes and schools, which have been provided by various text and multimedia tools, in order to organize awareness-raising and fund-raising days: “Caritas has developed a series of creative ways in which supporters can raise funds. For example, those who are avoiding coffee, chocolate or any other food as a Lenten sacrifice can give the money they would have spent on such goods to the Project Compassion campaign. During the Friday fasts, one could reflect on the conditions of the less fortunate", concludes O'Callaghan.
