ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - ‘New look’ for Samok monthly newsletter published by Catholic Bishops of Korea to meet more effectively needs of Catholic clergy and laity and help tackle present day challenges

Seoul (Fides Service) - Not just lifting, a total overhaul, in order to meet more effectively the needs of Catholic clergy and laity and tackle the challenges of the present day. Samok monthly newsletter published by the Catholic Bishops of Korea has been updated and given a completely new look.
The previous version on the whole rather academic was out of touch with pastoral and social difficulties and challenges encountered by parishes, movements and associations in society of today. In its new edition Samok will give attention to important topics such as bio-ethics, communication, immigration. “Our purpose is to help clergy and other pastoral workers in their daily ministry and service”, said editor Mgr Basil Cho Kyu-man, who explained that the Bishops realised the publication needed updating to be more of service and use in times of continual cultural and technological change.
The Church in Korea recently confirmed commitment to harness the media and new IT to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Bishops’ social communications commissions intends to create a special body to deal with media relations and projects of Information Technology. In this endeavour the local Church relies on expert lay Catholics, always a prominent part of the Church in Korea. In this context the mentioned Commission will intensity efforts to guarantee media formation at national and local level. Several diocese are already present in the field of IT: Uijeongbu diocese for example has a Catholic TV channel on the Internet UTV which it has termed “cyber-mission”.
