AMERICA/URUGUAY - “Christmas is the irruption of something "new" which we can neither buy nor manipulate nor adapt to meet our own will or whim” says President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Uruguay

Thursday, 22 December 2005

San José y Flores (Fides Service) - Bishop Pablo Galimberti, Bishop of San José di Maggio and President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Uruguay (CEU), recently told Radio Maria Uruguay that “Christmas is the coming or the irruption of something “new” which we can neither buy nor manipulate nor adapt to our will or whim”. And he stressed the need to rediscover the authentic sense of Christmas and to live it in our hearts, “opening our hands to let them be filled with the amazing and adorable act of Almighty God who becomes a little child, and cries and wants to be carried by hands which are weak but want to escape their selfishness and squalor”.
Christmas, the Bishop said, is not superficiality, frivolity or escape. Authentic celebration “helps us not to flee at the sight of all the injustice which darkens life and society, but to find new inward strength to change ourselves from within”.
