EUROPE/RUMANIA - OMI mission in Târgu Jiu grows around the Word of God: monthly meetings of the Bethany School of the Word at St. John of Capestrano parish

Târgu Jiu (Fides Service) - “Living the Gospel in the present moment” was the theme of the 3rd Meeting of the School of the Word held on Sunday 18 December in preparation for Christmas at St John of Capestrano parish Târgu Jiu. The subject for reflection was the mystery of the Incarnation where mankind, God and time are present. Three dimensions which touch the daily life of every believer. The person who listens to the Word and meditates it, enters history only when by putting it into practice. In this way the person answers God’s call and bears missionary witness.
The Bethany School of the Word started in October as part of stage 3 of a mission programme launched by the Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate with Fr Petru Husariu parish priest at Târgu Jiu. Stage 2 started on 13 March 2005 with a Mass presided by Archbishop Ioan Robu, Catholic Archbishop of Bucharest who on that occasion conferred the missionary mandate on the OMI missionaries.
The background of the monthly meeting is the town of Bethany where Jesus often went to visit Martha, Maria e Lazarus (Lk 10, 39-42). In their home the Master is made welcome, he is happy to be there and speaks freely. This scene is relived during the parish missions at Listening Centres where people set everything aside to listen to the Master, and continues in the meetings of the School of the Word where people reflect on how to put the teaching of Jesus into practice. This school, a purely spiritual school, proposes three fundamental exercises: listening, remembering and living in the present moment.
The Oblate Missionaries of Mary Immaculate have been in Rumania since 1998 with two communities one in Maracineni and since 2003 another in Roman. In Bucharest the Oblates collaborate with youth pastoral, they preach in parishes, animate ongoing formation for consecrated persons and the area of Craiova accompany lay people and families in the Christian life.
