Cairo (Agenzia Fides) - Hundreds of Egyptians, largely belonging to the Coptic community, gathered spontaneously in front of the police station in Manshiet Nasser district to express their anger after the news of the killing of a Copt, who was detained there.
The murdered copt was called Jamal Kamal Aweidah, and was just over 40, and was arrested on Wednesday, July 19, by the police after being denounced for a case of fraud and corruption related to his job. His brother immediately went to the detention center to meet him, but was not allowed to see him. 10 hours after the arrest, the news of Jamal's death was spread. Police officers tried to let the death pass as a case of suicide, but Jamal’s family members believe he was tortured. The judicial authorities have ordered the autopsy. Prior to this story, last December some police officers had been sentenced to trial on charges of having tortured the Catholic copt Magdy McCain to death. (GV) (Agenzia Fides 21/7/2017)
