Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Two delegates of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were kidnapped in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo. According to news sent to Agenzia Fides by CEPADHO (a local NGO), the two Red Cross leaders, Muhindo and Joseph, were blocked around 8.30 am on June 7 on the road between Kirumba and Kaseghe, in the southern part of Luberon Territory, in the province of North Kivu.
"According to several testimonies - says the statement sent to Agenzia Fides - some street bandits came out from the forest and during the robbery the assailants kidnapped Muhindo and Joseph".
CEPADHO, in strongly condemning the kidnapping, "expresses its concern over the fate of the two humanitarian workers, given the cruelty of armed groups" and is concerned that the kidnapping "could strike humanitarian action in southern Lubero, in a moment when there is a desperate need of help".
Humanitarian agency operators have recently been targeted in different areas of the DRC. In the province of Central Kasai, a trial has begun against two suspected killers of two UN experts, Michael Sharp and Zaida Catalan, who had to investigate the violence that upsets the province (see Fides Fides 29/3/2017).
