VATICAN - 350 priests from mission countries sent to Rome to study at pontifical universities reside at Propaganda Fide colleges

Vatican City (Fides Service) - Every year a good number of priests in mission territories are sent by their respective bishops to study in Rome at one of the pontifical universities. These student priests reside at the three colleges run by the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. The colleges San Pietro apostolo, San Paolo apostolo and Pontificio Collegio Urbano, recently issued information on the number of student priest residents for the academic year 2005/2006: a total number of 350 student-priests: Collegio San Paolo189, San Pietro 141 and Pontificio Collegio Urbano 20.
Nations represented are 52 at Collegio S. Paolo, 44 at Collegio S. Pietro and 16 at Collegio Urbano: mainly Africans (89 priests at S. Paolo; 76 at S. Pietro; 9 at Collegio Urbano), followed by Asians d (86 at S. Paolo; 57 at S. Pietro; 11 at Collegio Urbano), America (10 at S. Paolo and 5 at S. Pietro), Oceania 5 (2 at S. Paolo and 3 at S. Pietro) from Europe (2 at S. Paolo and 1 at S. Pietro). The country which has sent the highest number is India (30 at S. Paolo; 12 at S. Pietro, 2 at Collegio Urbano).
Most students have enrolled for courses at Urban University: 106 from Collegio S. Paolo, 75 from Collegio San Pietro and 17 from Collegio Urbano; followed by Pontificio Istituto Biblico (25 from Collegio S. Paolo, 11 from Collegio San Pietro) and the Pontifical Gregorian University (18 from S. Paolo and 13 from S. Pietro). The most popular faculty is Canon Law (31 students from Collegio S.Paolo, 22 from S. Pietro and 3 from Collegio Urbano); followed by Sacred Scripture (25 from S.Paolo and 11 from S.Pietro) and Biblical theology (20 from S.Paolo and 14 from S.Pietro). (S.L.)
