Washington (Agenzia Fides) - The President of the Commission for Migrations of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Mgr. Joe Steve Vásquez, Bishop of Austin, Texas, expressed his appreciation to the Secretary of the Department for National Security, John Kelly, for his decision to extend the temporary protection for a further six months to over 58,000 Haitians who live and work in the United States. However, he urged to continue the commitment and humanitarian assistance to improve living conditions in Haiti. This group of Haitians had arrived in the United States after the 2010 earthquake and had a temporary permit stay which expires this month.
"We encourage our government to work with the Haitian government to provide aid and assistance for reconstruction", concludes the statement sent to Fides. Through Church service networks, we will continue to help Haitian families in the United States to help the process of reconstruction in Haiti and look for opportunities to collaborate with the Church of Haiti and with the Haitian and US governments".
