Lilongwe (Fides Service)- Bishop Matthias A. Chimole, emeritus Bishop of Lilongwe, capital of Malawi, died of a heart attack on 18 October at Likuni Hospital Lilongwe.
Matthias Chimole was born in 1916 at Nakhwala, diocesi of Zomba in Malawi and was ordained a priest on 21 September 1947. On 21 September 1970 he was appointed Bishop of Zomba and ordained on 13 of the following December. On 20 December 1979 he was appointed Bishop of Lilongwe. On 20 December 1994, having reached the age of retirement he renounced the pastoral government of the diocese and went to live in a Home for retired clergy in Lilongwe. The Bishop’s funeral was held yesterday 21 November in Likuni parish church. (Agenzia Fides 22/11/2005 righe 13 parole 124)
