Honiara (Fides Service) - “There is a real need for students and people who want to learn more, to use the media, as mush as possible to read papers, listen to the radio and watch TV, as all these are part of the development of a country. Media plays and important role in decision making to guide the country, the politicians and church leaders and all the members of the community - as they check on all the balances - spending, decision making, for the benefit of a people. Hence to be informed the media is essential and it can enhance the lives of people”. This emerged during a recent seminar for school pupils and students organised by Catholic Communications Solomons directed.
The participants presented activities during the past year. More schools are adding Communications courses to their study curriculum offering students the opportunity to study sociology of the media and take part in practical activity, revealing in this way new talents.
“The media are indispensable for promoting peace and harmony in Solomons, said Salesian Father Ambrose Pereira, Catholic Communications director. Recently Fr Ambrose was in Lyons for a SIGNIS symposium on the theme “The mass media for a culture of peace”. On his return he shared with the local people the contents of the meeting of Catholic communicators from all over the world.
The Church in the Solomons strives to form young Catholics media workers promoting seminars on various themes, questions of moral and theology as well as practical course on how to use the radio, Internet, TV. The finality is to keep young Catholic delegates from the dioceses of Solomons informed about the evolution of the possibilities offered by new media which can be useful channels for spreading the Gospel, the mission of the Church.
Since February 2005 the Gospel travels via radio thanks to Radio Bosco opened by the Salesian community with programmes of education, news, music, religion, and also live broadcasts of Mass. The local Church also has a bulletin Voice Katolica to meet the challenge of communications. (PA) (Agenzia Fides 21/11/2005 righe 30 parole 324)
