ASIA/INDIA - Appointment of the Auxiliary Bishops of Bombay

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 20 December 2016 the Holy Father appointed rev. Allwyn D'Silva, Episcopal Vicar of Bombay, and rev. Barthol Barretto, of the clergy of Mumbai, parish priest and Vicar Forane as auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese of Bombay (India). Rev. D'Silva was assigned the titular see of Dura and rev. Barretto was assigned the titular see of Strongoli.
Rev. Allwyn D'Silva was born on April 20, 1948, in Mumbai, in the Archdiocese of Bombay. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at St. Pius X College, Goregaon, Archdiocese of Bombay. He obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Economics at the University of Delhi and a Masters in Political Science at Mumbai University. He was ordained a priest on 19 April 1975. Since his ordination he has served the following roles: 1975-1976: Parish Vicar of St. Anthony Parish in Vakola; 1976-1977: Ministry at the National Vocations Centre in Pune; 1977-1986: Head of vocations, with residence at St. Anthony Parish in Vakola; 1986-1988: Assistant priest at St. Jude Parish in Jeri-Meri, Mumbai; 1988-1994: Parish priest at St. Jude Parish in Jeri-Meri, Mumbai; 1991-1994: Dean of the South East Salsette Deanery; 1994-2000: Priest-in-charge of St. Jude Church in Maladi East; 2000-2007: Priest-in-charge of St. Anthony's Church in Dharavi; 2002-2007: Dean of the North Mumbai Deanery; 2007-2011: Pastor of Our Lady of Nazareth Parish in Bhayandar; 2007-2011: Dean of Bhayandar Deanery; since 2011: parish priest of St. John the Baptist Parish in Thane; since 2012: Episcopal Vicar of Bombay.
He is also a member of the Pastoral Council, of the Council of Priests, of the Commission for Justice and Peace, Co-President of the Centre for Peace Trust, Director of the Archiepiscopal Office for Environment, Director of the Prison Ministry India in Mumbai, and Secretary of the Climate Change Desk of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences (FABC). He taught for 35 years at St. Pius X College in Mumbai.
Rev. Barthol Barretto was born on September 16, 1961, in Mahim, Mumbai, in the Archdiocese of Bombay. He completed his studies in philosophy and theology at St. Pius X College, Goregaon, Mumbai. He has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Bombay University, Mumbai. He was ordained a priest on April 8, 1989 for the Archdiocese of Bombay.
Since his ordination, he has seved the following roles: 1989-1993: Parish Vicar of St. Xavier Parish, in Dabul; 1993-1995: Deputy Director of the Youth Section of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Bandra; 1995-1999: Director of the Youth Section of the Diocesan Pastoral Centre in Bandra; 1999-2002: Priest-in-charge of St. Francis Xavier Parish Unit, in Panvel; 2002-2004: Pastor of St. Lawrence Parish, in Wagle Estate, Thane and at the same time Dean of the Deanery of Thane; 2004-2008: Secretary of the Archbishop; 2008-2011: Pastor of St. Thomas Parish, in Goregaon East, and Spiritual Director at St. Pius X College in Goregaon; since 2010: Administrator of St. Pius X College in Goregaon and Dean of the Deanery of Borivli; since 2011: parish priest at the Immaculate Conception Parish in Borivli.
