AFRICA/ANGOLA – The family in Africa today and tomorrow, in the light of the Gospel

Luanda (Agenzia Fides) – A solemn celebration of the Eucharist in the parish dedicated to the Holy Family in Luanda, capital of Angola, marked the official opening of the 17th Plenary Assembly of SECAM/SCEAM (Symposium of Catholic Bishops’ Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) on the theme “The family in Africa today and tomorrow, in the light of the Gospel”. The Mass, attended by some 150 Assembly participants, including Cardinals, Bishops, secretaries of regional and national African Bishops’ Conferences, was presided by the Bishop of Lubango, Bishop Gabriel Mblingue, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Angola and Sao Tomé: for the first time since it was established, in 1969, SECAM is holding its assembly in Angola.
During the meeting, which will conclude with Mass on Sunday 24 July, the participants, with seminars and discussion groups, will focus on a series of issues connected with the situation at present and the future of the African family , taking into consideration the two recent Synod’s on the Family and the Post Synodal Apostolic Exhortation “Amoris laetitia”. The participants will then reflect on the challenges facing the family in Africa today, the evangelization of the family and how the impact of the new media and new ideologies is changing family life on the continent. The reflection will aim to identify pastoral solutions most suited to meeting the challenges facing the family, the fundamental nucleus of society. (SL) (Agenzia Fides 20/7/2016)
