ASIA/SOUTH KOREA - Successful “cyber-pastoral”: catechumens follow instruction via the web

Thursday, 27 October 2005

Seoul (Fides Service) - Learning the principle contents of the faith on the Web and using a home PC to follow an itinerary of catechumenate leading to baptism is possible today in South Korea where the local Catholic community has decided to make the most of the possibilities offered by the network of nets.
Cyber-Pastoral Centre opened by Seoul archdiocese and directed by Rev. John Ri Gi-jeong offers formation for catechumens on the Internet open to anyone wishing to know more about the Christian faith.
The Course can be followed at http://veritas.ne.kr and comprises 50 didactic units divided so that every month the catechumen reads and assimilates 8-9 units each for 20 minutes.
Naturally, the promoters say, catechesis via the Web is not enough. Individuals will also have to go to their nearest Catholic church to meet the priests and take part in the services. But personal formation and learning are entrusted to electronic media which is a platform on which to start discussions with priests who follow the faith itinerary.
The first four units of the Course are open to all. The remaining 46 are for those who want to become Catholics. For every unit the Course suggests links, e-mail addresses of priests, men and women religious, experts, Catholic institutes able to assist Web users and serve as points of reference for people interested in knowing more about Christianity.
“Catechesis via Internet is a new modality which could become typical in the totally computerised society of today. It can eliminate barriers and obstacles of time and place but it cannot be a substitute for the necessary personal contact”, said Fr John Ri Gi-jeong.
