San Juan (Agenzia Fides) - Wisconsin Congressman Sean Duffy presented a new version of the legislation to help solve the financial crisis Puerto Rico is going through. The recent bill for Puerto Rico entitled "PROMESA" (now HR 5278), offers tools to renegotiate the debt and establishes a tax supervisory board.
Eric LeCompte, executive director of the "Jubilee USA Network", the network of organizations and religious communities, sent Fides the following statement: "Congress should approve these laws on Puerto Rico's debt as soon as possible. There cannot be economic growth in Puerto Rico until the debt is not discussed again. Without a negotiated solution to the crisis, this legislation provides tools that can help pay off the debt in different times and ways. We need clear targets to reduce child poverty on the island. We want a legislation to protect ordinary workers. We want to protect local democracy".
Puerto Rico is still suffering from the debt crisis, to the point that basic services for the population have been cut (see Fides 18/3/2016) and one begins to see groups who leave the country for fear and poverty (see Fides 03/05/2016). (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 20/05/2016)
