AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Mgr. Salah denounces: The Wayuu communities abandoned by all

ZuletaRiohacha (Agenzia Fides) - His Exc. Mgr. Héctor Ignacio Salah Zuleta, Bishop of Riohacha, speaking to a local radio station (Radio BLU) denounced the neglect faced by the native Wayuu communities in the department of La Guajira, and listed the causes of the current problems.
"The problem is not just the multinationals – stressed the Bishop. To give you an example: we, as a Church, manage several schools that are the source for the formation of the Wayuu people. In one of these schools, 20 minutes from Riohacha there is no gas". And this is just a small example of what is happening in the region. The Bishop then denounces the responsibility of politicians for the death of children in La Guajira due to malnutrition: "The political class has not understood that their first duty is to ensure the well-being of the population" (see Fides 03/02/2016).
Other causes have, however, aggravated the crisis, such as the closure of the border with Venezuela, and they "were able to get affordable food". "In addition, drought is another factor that is seriously affecting our population, because it was not possible to cultivate the land as in previous years", concluded the Bishop.
