AMERICA/SURINAME - Appointment of the Bishop of Paramaribo

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 11 November 2015, the Holy Father appointed Rev. Karel Choennie, parish priest and former Vicar General of the same diocese as Bishop of Paramaribo (Suriname).
Rev. Karel Choennie was born in Suriname on December 20, 1958. He completed his studies at the Catholic University of Nimega, in the Netherlands, where he obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He studied at the St. John Vianney Regional Seminary in Port of Spain, earned a licentiate in Pastoral Theology at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium. He was ordained a priest on September 30, 1985.
Since his ordination he has served the following pastoral and academic roles: 1985-1994: Pastor of St. Mary Queen of the Universe in Paramaribo; 1994-1996: Pastor of St. Clementa in Paramaribo; 1997-2001: Pastor of St. Boniface and St. Clement in Paramaribo; 1999-2003; Episcopal vicar and member of the diocesan Curia; 2001: Pastor of St. Clement in Paramaribo; 2005-2014: Vicar General.
