ASIA/INDIA – Dalit infants burnt alive: Bishops deplore inhuman act
New Delhi (Agenzia Fides) – The Catholic Bishops of India have firmly condemned the incident in Faridabad on 21 October when the home of a Dalit family was set on fire and in the blaze two infants were burned alive: the mother is left fighting for her life. The Bishops’ statement sent to Fides reads : “This is an inhuman act of which our country should be ashamed. Atrocities against Dalit Indians happen repeatedly in various parts of India. There is no respect for the human life of Dalit communities, in Haryana in particular many live in fear for their lives”. The statement by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, entrusted to the Office for Dalit and no-caste people, continues “we expresses deep concern and deplore the increase of inter-community violence in our country”. Expressing solidarity with the victims of violence, the Bishops urge the government to “provide adequate protection for Dalit people, safeguard the human rights of our people and respect our Constitution”.
