ASIA/INDIA - Appointment of Bishop of Kurnool

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father has appointed the Rev. Fr. Johannes Gorantla, O.C.D., currently Rector of the Seminarium Missionum at the Pontifical Theological Faculty and Pontifical Institute of Spirituality «Teresianum» in Rome, as Bishop of the Diocese of Kurnool (India).
His Exc. Msgr. Johannes Gorantla, O.C.D., was born on February 27, 1974 in Nawabu Peta, in the Diocese of Vijayawada. He made his first profession in the Order of Discalced Carmelites in 1994 and his perpetual vows in 2000. He studied philosophy at the Sacred Heart Philosophical College in Kerala and theology at the Teresianum in Rome. He earned a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Biblicum and a Doctorate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He was ordained a priest on January 10, 2002. He has held the following positions and carried out further studies: Deputy Parish Priest in Kalluru, Diocese of Khammam (2002); Studies in Rome (2002-2008); Provincial in Andhra Pradesh, Secretary of the O.C.D. Inter Provincial Council of India, Consultor of the Diocese of Khammam, Member of the Episcopal Council of Andhra Pradesh for the Biblical and Proclamation Commissions, External Professor of Sacred Scripture at the Jyothirbhavan in Kalamassery in Kerala and at the St. Joseph Seminary in the Diocese of Khammam (2008-2014); President of the Conference of Religious of Andhra Pradesh and Vice Chairman of the Commission for Catholic Education (2010-2014); parish priest of St. Pius General Definitor of the Discalced Carmelites (2015-2021); since 2021 he has been Rector of the Seminarium Missionum at the Teresianum in Rome.
