AMERICA/HONDURAS - Honduran Missionary receives an award for human rights

Tegucigalpa (Agenzia Fides) - The Jesuit Honduran missionary Fr. Ismael Moreno Coto, 57, is the winner of the Rafto Award for Human Rights. Better known as "Father Melo", the missionary was honored for his defense of freedom of expression, in one of the most violent countries. Honduras has the highest murder rate in the world (see Fides 01/06/2015).
Father Coto manages two organizations working for human rights in the city of El Progreso: Radio Progreso and ERIC (Equipo de Reflexión, Investigación y Comunicación). He is also the founder of the Honduran edition of the regional publication "Envio" and the magazine "A mecate Corto".
Since 1987, the Rafto Foundation awards a prize each year for defenders of human rights and democracy, including four winners of the Nobel Peace Prize: Aung San Suu Kyi, Jose Ramos-Horta, Kim Dae-jung and Shirin Ebadi. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 02/10/2015)
