Taipei (Fides Service) - The committee for the building of the new of Our Lady of China’s Martyr Saints on Shrine is intensifying preparations for the openeing ceremony on October 1, the 5th anniversary of the canonisation in Rome by John Paul II of the 120 Chinese martyrs. According to Christian Life Weekly, bulletin issued by Taipei diocese, the committee has invited Catholics and non Catholics to take part.
Local church authorities in Taipei are certain the new Shrine will help promote devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and strengthen the faith of Christians in view of more intense evangelisation.
The first nucleus of the Shrine a mountain hut with a statue of Our Lady, was built on Mount Wu Feng Qi by a Camillian brother who was working at the local St Mary’s Catholic Hospital and was moved by the beauty of the countryside. In 1980 five excursionists lost their way. In the dark, desperate and fearful they gathered to pray in front of the statue and eventually made their way safely back to the valley.
From then on people began to come here to pray gving different names to different paths like, path of penance, path of healing, path of salvation, path of conversion. The foundation stone for a new shrine was laid in 1988, and construction work began in 1994. Today the faithful are looking forward to the solemn inauguration of the Shrine of Our Lady of China’s Martyr Saints.
