EUROPE/SPAIN - September 30 closing date for appeal against the anti-constitutional law approving ‘homosexual marriage’. Unprecedented pro-family world movement with busy agenda

Thursday, 15 September 2005

Madrid (Fides Service) - September 30 is the closing date for appealing against the anti-constitutional law approving ‘homosexual marriage’ recently passed in Spain. Unless the Popular Party, the only body with the number of 50 MPs necessary to do so, appeals, the law will go ahead. Leaders of pro-family movements are confident the appeal will be made, given the existance of abundant juridical arguments. Benigno Blanco, Vice president of the Spanish Family Forum said it would by ‘inconsistent’ not to appeal because the Popular Party voted against the law in Congress and in the Senate rejecting it as “clearly anti-constitutional”.
Eduardo Hertfelder, President of the Family Policy Institute hopes the Popular Party will not abandon the family for which this appeal represents the last chance to oppose an unjust law. “They must realise that for many, many people this subject is by no means secondary” he said recalling that there exist “solid juridical arguments to win the appeal”.
For Hertfelder “this is the first time we see such a strong movement in favour of the family at the national and international levels, with common well organised agendas. We have demonstrated that millions of people are willing to defend and promote the family”. So far activity has been mainly to defend the family, but the goal now, said Hertfelder, “is to promote a new political agenda politica to support families”. “They presented 'homosexual marriage' as recognition of the rights of a discriminated group which disturbs no one. But this is not so. This is an attack on marriage and the family. We reacted and said, loud and clear, the family union is unique and unequalled”. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 15/9/2005 righe 22 parole 311)
