AFRICA/UGANDA - The Pope appoints new Auxiliary of Mbarara

Vatican City (Fides Service) The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 2 July 2005 appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Mbarara (Uganda) Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha, until now Chancellor of the same archdiocese assigning to him the titular see of Tacia montana.
Rev. Lambert Bainomugisha was born 12 Junly 1961 in the then diocese of Mbarara. He studied in his own country and in Canada obtaining a degree in Canon Law at St Paul University Ottowa. He was ordained a priest on 13 July 1991 then ministered for a few years in parishes, before going to Canada to complete his studies. Until now he was chancellor of the diocese and chaplain at the general House of the Sisters of Our Lady of Good Counsel and a community of Poor Clares.
The archdiocese of Mbarara, created in 1999 is situated in south west Uganda. It has four suffragan dioceses and includes 3 civil districts. It has an area pf 10,980 sq km. A population of 2,205,862, of whom 856,168 are Catholics gathered in 25 parishes assisted by 131 priests, (116 diocesan and 15 Religious), 16 Brothers, 266 women Religious of 10 different congregations and there are 30 major seminarians.
